Why Coaching?

Hello!  I am Michelle Merritt, a professional Life and Wellness Coach.  After 25 years as a manager in the corporate world, I found that I spent a great deal of time helping people overcome life situations and assisting them in wellness plans so they could continue to work.  Over time, I found that I truly enjoyed this part of my job and decided to make it my profession.  I have been trained through the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (IPEC) and the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy (FMCA).

There are a lot of different ways we can get help on a daily basis. We can meet with coaches, consultants, mentors, therapists, sports coaches, friends, and family. Every single one of these professions is absolutely vital in life but there are true differences in what each one achieves. What is the difference between these modalities and Life and Wellness Coaching?

Consultants are experts in a certain field with an agenda and answers for a client. A coach does not have an agenda and accepts the client for who they are, helping them bring effective change in the way that the client desires, in a confidential and safe environment.

Mentors are role models…people you strive to be like. They have the experience that the client is looking to draw from. The coach may not have that specific experience, rather, they are an expert in the “process” of becoming.

Therapists often analyze behavior and help clients overcome issues, fix problems and sometimes manage mental illness. Coaches focus on solutions and how to let go of the energy that the past holds to help you move forward. You can look at it as we focus less on the “why” you do certain things and more on the “how” to move forward in a positive way.

Sports coaching is often focused on how to win versus lose and is based on competition. In Life and Wellness coaching, there is no competition. We help people win in every situation without having to compete with others.

Friends are amazing resources. We all draw on our friend’s advice, sometimes taking the advice…sometimes not. A friend may not have the training to guide you in a way that is focused on you, but rather what “they” think you should do and are often avoiding topics that will hurt your feelings. A coach is non-judgmental and objective, and can help you find the path that best serves you.

A Life and Wellness coach uses proven strategies to help clients reach life satisfaction that is sustainable and achieve the highest levels of performance.

How How Did I Get Here?

Have you ever had that feeling that you were meant to do more? Life can be pretty good, with some ups and downs, but are you continuously searching for health or purpose?  Do you find that you are successful for a little while and then you “fall off the wagon?”

I know the challenge of health issues and the need for a more satisfying life. I’ve been there.  I know how hard it is to find the resources and sincere guidance we all need.  It can be a bumpy road.

As a kid, my life was a roller coaster of good times and traumatic events.  As an adult, I had my life together, or so I thought I did. I was college educated with a high paying, well respected management job. I was a married, mother of two, living in a beautiful home, in a coveted neighborhood, with 2 dogs and a minivan. As they would say, I was living the “American Dream”.

Unfortunately, along the way, I found myself in a place where I wasn’t doing what was best for me. I ended up with sudden onset pain and illness in my early 40’s that sent me on a terrifying journey.

I felt like I was broken. I was anxious and depressed. I didn’t know which way to turn. I was constantly in an analysis paralysis. I saw doctors, took medication, read books, cried, didn’t sleep, and worried endlessly. I was miserable and couldn’t seem to find an end in sight.  Then something changed.

You see, I learned to believe in my inner voice. I learned that fear and baggage from our childhood and beyond, hold us in a constant state of turmoil and often make us feel horrible and often lead to serious if not life threatening illness.  This fear can also keep us from following our true path in life and hold us back from our purpose or dream job. It is said that it is darkest before the dawn. I am here to tell you that if you persevere and really find the resources that help you start listening to your body and your inner voice (Holy Spirit, Inner Child, Universe, whatever you want to call it), you will find that the answers are with you all along.

All of my years of studying the brain, energy, emotion, physiology and chemical reactions within the body lead me to my purpose and dream career of becoming a Professionally Trained Life and Wellness Coach.  My methods create SUSTAINABLE change.

You are meant to have health and a prosperous life.  I can help you get back on that path to live out your own fulfilling, healthy life of vitality and prosperity!
